The progenitor of the Vela pulsar

چکیده
With Gaia parallaxes it is possible to study the stellar populations associated with individual Galactic supernova remnants (SNR) estimate mass of exploding star. Here we analyze luminous stars near Vela pulsar and SNR find that its progenitor was probably (>90%) low (8.1-10.3Msun). The presence O star gamma2 Vel a little over 100 pc from primary ambiguity, as including in analysis volume significantly increases probability (to 5%) higher (>20Msun) progenitors. However, be high Vel's cluster at birth, would have runaway an unbound binary unusually velocity. impediment analyzing large numbers SNRs this manner lack accurate distances. This can likely solved by searching for absorption lines function distance, method which yielded distance agreement direct parallax. If 10Msun external galaxy, 50 search region used extragalactic studies contain only ~10% formed 50~pc around birth ~90% been elsewhere.

On the velocity of the Vela pulsar
It is shown that if the shell of the Vela supernova remnant is responsible for nearly all the scattering of the Vela pulsar, then the scintillation and proper motion velocities of the pulsar can only be reconciled with each other in the case of nonzero transverse velocity of the scattering material. A possible origin of large-scale transverse motions in the shell of the Vela supernova remnant i...
متن کاملMulticolor Photometry of the Vela Pulsar ⋆
Multicolor photometry of the Vela pulsar (PSR B0833−45), updated by recent HST/WFPC2 observations obtained in the 555W , 675W and 814W filters, is presented. The available data provide the best characterization so far of the pulsar spectral shape, which is dominated by a flat power law continuum with spectral index α = −0.2± 0.2, consistent with the extrapolation in the optical domain of the po...
متن کاملRosat Observations of the Vela Pulsar
The ROSAT HRI was used to monitor X-ray emission from the Vela Pulsar. Six observations span 2-1/2 years and 3 glitches. The summed data yield a determination of the pulse shape, and X-ray emission from the pulsar is found to be 12% pulsed with one broad and two narrow peaks. One observation occurred 15 days after a large glitch. No change in pulse structure was observed and any change in X-ray...
متن کاملXmm-newton Observations of the Vela Pulsar
We present spectral analysis from XMM-Newton observations of the Vela pulsar. We analyzed thermal emission from the pulsar dominating below ∼ 1 keV since extracted spectra are heavily contaminated by nebular emission at higher energy. Featureless high-resolution spectra of the Reflection Grating Spectrometer aboard XMM-Newton suggest the presence of a hydrogen atmosphere, as previously indicate...
متن کاملThe Vela Pulsar Wind Nebula at 6cm
Observations using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at a wavelength of 6 cm have uncovered the radio counterpart to the compact X-ray nebula surrounding the Vela pulsar. Two lobes were found oriented about the spin axis of the pulsar, starting at the edge of X-ray emission, they extend to three times the size. The northern lobe has a bright, defined edge and an integrated flux of 0.14 Jy, ...
